Young Minds, Bold Ideas: Stories of Change

As part of the Tinker on Wheels initiative, we recently conducted a 5-day STEM and Innovation Workshop in July 2025 at PM Shri Govt. High School, Baramunda. Each day focused on a unique theme designed to spark creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving among students.

At Tinker on Wheels (ToW), we believe that every child has the spark of an innovator, waiting to be kindled with the right opportunity. Over the past five days, our workshops turned classrooms into buzzing hubs of creativity, where students learned the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and innovation.

The journey came full circle when these young minds presented their business ideas—from solving everyday community challenges to imagining futuristic products that could change lives. Their confidence, creativity, and courage to dream big truly reflect the spirit of the ToW initiative.

Star Innovators and Their Ideas: ToW 2085A

One of the most inspiring outcomes of the workshop was the innovation pitch session on Day 5. Students presented thoughtful, well-structured business proposals with practical impact. Among them, a few ideas stood out:

Team 1: Tackling Water Scarcity

Students: Supriya Rani Rout, Muna Nayak, Ayushman Dalai (Class 7)

Idea: A comprehensive solution to water scarcity in drought-prone regions—combining water harvesting, filtration, and affordable distribution. The team even included details like investment, taxation, and procurement in their budget plan, showcasing impressive clarity for their age.

Team 2: Empowering Women Through Handcrafted Products

Students: Santoshi Sharma, Tanushree Priyadarshini

Idea: A home-based employment model aimed at homemakers and widows with limited education. Their proposal involved creating and selling handcrafted items such as embroidered handkerchiefs, summer gloves, masks, scarves, sweaters, and home décor made from recycled materials.

Individual Innovator: Solar-Powered Cooler

Student: Dhruba Sahoo

Idea: A low-cost solar cooler designed for regions with limited electricity access. His vision centered around clean energy, affordability, and rural usability.

A special thanks to our partner - IIT UK Alumni Association, whose trust and encouragement made these outreach programs possible. Because of their support, hundreds of students had the platform to think differently, tinker boldly, and showcase ideas that might one day grow into real ventures.

In May–June 2025, ToW 2085A reached 389 underprivileged students from slums and orphanages in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, inspiring them through hands-on STEM learning. Many, once lacking discipline or direction, began dreaming bigger—building prototypes and aspiring to careers like scientist or soldier.

One such student, Ayush from Birbasa Slum, overcame harmful habits and impressed us with his clear explanation of Newton’s Laws of Motion.

Our outreach was supported by SOCH & IIT UK Alumni Association, enabling us to connect with those who need education and mentorship most.

In June, another student, Sneha Suryavanshi from Class 9, lives in the migrant workers’ colony near Lalitgiri, IIT Bhubaneswar, and dreams of becoming a doctor. Her transformation during this program is beyond words—best experienced through the video.

This outreach was supported by IIT Bhubaneswar, Unnat Bharat Abhiyan and IIT UK Alumni Association.

2483A Sonbhadra: Inspiring Stories of Change

Anjali Yadav, Class 9, from Jeevan Shala, Faripaan, initially struggled to participate in class. However, she attended all sessions regularly and gradually began presenting and engaging in group discussions.

By Day 5, she showed remarkable confidence and leadership. Even after a marriage function at her home, she didn’t want to miss the session and came to complete her workshop, driven by her eagerness to learn and her inspiration to achieve something meaningful.
