From launching their rockets to launching their dreams, the students of Zila Parishad High School (ZPHS), Yallammabanda, Hyderabad, experienced an immersive hands-on learning session with Young Tinker in collaboration with F5, Nirmaan organization. From June 24 to 26, 2024, students dived into STEM concepts through the “learning by doing” approach. The workshop aimed to provide a launchpad for students to explore fundamental STEM concepts with the exciting, hands-on activity of a Water Rocket Launch.
The workshop began with students exploring their own strengths and interests. They discussed their dreams and role models, followed by a unique hands-on activity to assess their creativity index.
Over the course of three days, students delved into the fundamentals of physics and engineering. They worked in teams to design and build their own water rockets and launchers, applying their newfound knowledge in practical, creative ways. The climax of the workshop was the exhilarating moment when they launched their rockets using pressurized air and water, witnessing their creations soar high into the sky.
The Rocket Launch workshop was more than just a lesson in aerodynamics. It was a comprehensive learning experience that introduced students to the principles of Design Thinking and Engineering. They brainstormed ideas, created prototypes, tested their designs, and iterated based on their results. This process taught them valuable skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
A particularly memorable highlight was when students wrote their names and dreams on their rockets before launching them, symbolizing their aspirations reaching for new heights. This powerful moment underscored the workshop’s impact, as students saw their dreams take flight, literally and figuratively.
The event also provided a meaningful volunteer opportunity for 12 F5 employees. These dedicated individuals connected with the students, conducted sessions, and guided them through the rocket-building process. For the volunteers, this experience fostered a sense of ownership and pride as they witnessed the tangible impact of their efforts on the students’ learning and enthusiasm.
A special thanks to F5 (American technology company specializing in Multi-Cloud Security and Application Delivery) and the F5 Women Connect team (WEIG India Chapter Leads) for their unwavering support in bringing the Young Tinker experience to the students of ZPHS, Yallammabanda. Together, we have launched not just rockets, but the dreams and ambitions of the next generation of innovators.
